Bill Schaal is a member of the Patent Practice group. Being registered as a patent attorney with the United States Patent Office, Bill concentrates his practice on counseling and services in connection with patent-related matters, such as (i) the preparation and prosecution of patent applications in a wide range of technological fields such as computer electronics and mechanics, software, networking, and security (cryptography); (ii) offensive and defensive patent portfolio reviews; (iii) validity and non-infringement analyses and opinions of third party patents; (iv) expert witness reports and testimony; (v) offensive and defensive patent licensing negotiations; and (vi) due diligence investigations prompted by acquisition or licensing ventures.
As a partner at BSTZ, Bill has successfully protected and expanded the intellectual property rights of many BSTZ clients. Currently, Bill represents a wide range of clients, from individuals and small start-up companies to multi-national, multi-billion dollar corporations. His educational background and expertise lends itself to the counseling of high-technology and emerging companies, as well as companies in the mechanical art fields.
Bill has lectured on a variety of topics in the fields of patent prosecution and affirmative defenses in patent litigation, and has been recognized in various national publications including Los Angeles magazine and the American Lawyer.
