Dave Nicholson is a member of the Patent Practice Group.  Dave is a registered patent attorney whose practice focuses on intellectual property protection in the software and hardware industries.  Dave provides a broad range of patent related services, including preparation and prosecution of patent applications, design of patent programs, review and evaluation of patent portfolios, due diligence evaluations, reexamination, litigation support, and providing opinions regarding patent validity and infringement. Prior to coming to BSTZ, Dave worked at the Special Purpose Processor Development Group (SPPDG) at the Mayo Clinic designing MEMS devices and analyzing existing ASIC designs including both digital and analog devices.

Highlighted Work:
- Provided litigation support services to large litigation firms on several recent cases.

- Prepared and prosecuted both inter partes and ex parte reexamination requests on behalf of prestigious companies, such as Facebook and Guidewire.

- Developed a patent portfolio with a data retention start-up (Reconnex) that was recently acquired by a leading anti-virus and computer security company (McAfee) where the patent portfolio was an integral part of the acquisition.

- Experience in technologies including: processors (including general purpose, network, and security), chipsets, network devices (including routers, firewall/VPN security appliances, etc.), disk based storage systems for data recovery, and fabrication (including MEMS devices, TFTs in LCD displays, and PCM) software (including network security; cryptography; routing protocols; network management; compression and decompression of data, including video and audio standards such as MPEG-4; database access, including object oriented designs; data protection and retention; and backup utilities).
